Hantaviruses spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied
disease syndromes in Human.
Human who is around rats, mice, squirrels, hamsters that carry harmful hantaviruses can get HPS(hantavirus pulmonary syndrome ) / HFRS ( hemorrhagic
fever with renal syndrome ).
In Americas Hantaviruses
are known as “New World” hantaviruses which may cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).
In Europe and Asia hantaviruses,
known as “Old World” hantaviruses which may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
Hantavirus spread to humans when they breath in hantaviruses.
It happens when rodent urine , saliva, feces that contain a hantavirus are mix up into the air.
Human can get infected when they touch rodent ( rats, mice, squirrels, hamsters) urine, droppings, saliva or nesting materials that contain the virus and after that then touch their eyes, nose, or mouth.
One can also get infected from a rodent ( rats, mice, squirrels, hamsters) bite.
If a person is infected with HPS will take one to five weeks period for the
signs and symptoms.
Early signs and symptoms of hantavirus infected person will have severe
muscle aches, fever, fatigue.
Then after a few days it spreads thoroughout the body, person will suffer
from dizziness, breathing, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches.
There is no specific treatment, cure, or vaccine for hantavirus
infection.
If infected person recognize early and receive medical care in an
intensive care unit, they may do better.
Some people are calling it a new virus but it’s not true. It’s Old Virus was outbreak in May 1993.
Hantavirus disease was outbreak in the southwestern United States began in May1993 in the Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah known as The Four Corners.
National Park Service (NPS) has announced 10 confirmed cases of hantavirus infected people who visited to Yosemite National Park, California, US, in November, 2012.
In January 2017, Seoul virus infection has infected 17 people in 7 states. Which CDC assisted health officials is investigating an outbreak.
As of January 2017, 728 Cases of
hantavirus infection (HPS and non-pulmonary hantavirus infection) registered in
36 states of USA.
United States's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in a journal
writes that currently, the hantavirus genus includes more than 21 species.
Till date now, transmission of hantavirus has not transferred
from human-to-human contact.
